12/1/11 Additional Advanced Avalanche Classes for this winter.
In addition to the normal Level 1 Avi classes offered at our huts, Aspen Expeditions will be doing an Advanced Level 1 Avi class at the Braun Huts outside Aspen. This course is intended for those who have recently taken an AIARE (or equivalent) Level 1 course and would like more in-the-field experience. The class will introduce some Level 2 concepts and snow science but will focus on the practical application of Level 1 skills in a touring enviroment. You can find more info on these trips and how to sign up for them on our Events and Workshops page.
10/20/11 Snow bridges over the Eagle River
We just wanted to take the time to remind hut users about the status of snow bridges at the Camp Hale trailheads. At the Pando trailhead you won't find a permanent bridge over the river, but it might be worth looking for a snow bridge. Such bridges are more likely in mid winter but can often be found all winter long by exploring up or down the river a short distance. Your other option to ski 1/2 mile south to a vehicle bridge and then back up to McCallister Gulch.
At South Camp Hale you won't find a bridge over the river either, but due to the distance this trailhead can save you, it is usually worth looking for a snow bridge. Such bridges are more likely in mid winter. Boggy ground exists in this area as well, and needs a thick mid-winter snowpack for coverage. The nearest permanent bridge to South Camp Hale is at the main Camp Hale trailhead.
