Thanks to some helpful emails, we rented an avalanche kit (beacon, probe, shovel) at Sawatch Backcountry in Leadville. They are at 460 Harrison Ave Leadville, CO 80461, telly 719-486-2271. It was $40 for a Friday-Monday rental.

Someone also suggested The Trailhead in Buena Vista, CO but I was unable to get in touch with them, so I can't provide any info on them!

Closer to Vail, I was told that "Wilderness Sports in Silverthorne rents beacons, probes and shovels. Maybe AlpineQuest in Edwards too." I didn't try to contact those places, but they both have websites I think.

Hope this helps out anyone else looking for safety equipment!

Hi,
Sawatch Backcountry in Leadville rents Beacons, Avy gear, Tele/AT/Bcackountry ski gear and more.

They have a well stocked store and can fit boots, mount bindings, etc.

They are located close to huts, are very flexible and helpful.

The staff can provide local info on conditions-often by looking out the window, or by relaying reports from locals.

Just remember, a beacon is NOT a magic bullet. If you don't know how to use it it is, if it lulls you into a sense of false security, if anything, worse than useless. I used to work in a mountaineering store and we refused to rent beacons becuase we thought it unwise to rent beacons to people who didn't know how to use them and thought that a quick demonstration in the store was all they needed. Lots of practice is crucial! Same with probes, there is technique involved and believe it or not, there is a right (faster, more efficient) and wrong (slower more exhausting) way to shovel.

Not to lecture and maybe the folks you are talking about renting gear for do know how to use it, but I really worry about folks who rent saftey gear and then assume they are well prepared. I highly suggest owning the proper safety gear and being instructed and practiced in its proper use.
