Vail Pass to Fowler Hilliard

Post by sterlecki » Mon Dec 17, 2012 12:34 pm

After hiking up Wilder Gulch this summer and around Ptarmagin pass and peak to the road leading to Fowler Hilliard, the route looks pretty straight forward for a January Ski into FH. It appears that it may be shorter and less steep than skiing to Shrine Mountain Inn and then over to FH
Am I missing something?

Any thoughts from those who've tried it?

We did ski this route last January and found it pleasant and easy. You will have to share the Wilder Gulch route with snow mobiles but those that we encountered were very courteous. They slowed down, moved over or yielded to us when the trail narrowed.

On approaching Ptarmigan pass and ptarmigan hill on your right you have two choices, skirt around the hill or summit the hill and get some turns in.

On the way in we skirted the hill maintaining elevation and then descended to the road. On the way back we summited the hill and used summer road to descend to the pass.

We had bluebird days both ways but I could imagine that on a wind swept snowy day you would need to keep your bearings and stay oriented.

It's also a fun snow shoe to the pass for day hike.
